17a may be R inside BEECH = BREECH = buttocks = PRAT

6a GASH (extra) around (carrying) N (ending in exhaustioN) = GNASH (grind)

RIG (fit / fit out) inside GRI(P) (travel bag unfinished) = GRIGRI (amulet / charm from Africa)

I thought Gnash would be the answer to Grind but couldn't find any connection for Gash and Extra.
I still don't - what is it please?

If something is "gash" it's not required

I looked it up in Chambers, Trevor, and the most unpleasant they give is that - unpleasant, ghastly
